  • Concern: Damaged fabrics; shed larval skins

What Are Carpet Beetles?

Carpet beetles are small, rounded beetles whose larvae do the damage. The bristly little larvae feed on natural materials such as wool, silk, fur, feathers, leather, and stored dry goods.

Adults are harmless and feed on pollen outdoors, but they lay eggs indoors near food sources for the larvae, often in closets, under furniture, along baseboards, and in vents.

How to Control Carpet Beetles

Control centers on cleaning, protecting vulnerable items, and removing the larval food sources, since the damage is done by larvae hidden in quiet spots.

  • Vacuum thoroughly, including under furniture, along edges, and in closets.
  • Launder or dry-clean and then seal wool and other natural fabrics.
  • Discard or clean infested stored items and clean up lint and pet hair.
  • Treat cracks, edges, and harborage areas where larvae are found.
