Carpet beetle larvae quietly chew wool, silk, and stored goods. Learn the signs and how cleaning and storage stop the damage.
Reviewed and updated June 2026

Carpet beetle larvae feed on natural fibers and stored products. Vacuuming, laundering, and sealed storage are the core of control.
Carpet beetles are small, rounded beetles whose larvae do the damage. The bristly little larvae feed on natural materials such as wool, silk, fur, feathers, leather, and stored dry goods.
Adults are harmless and feed on pollen outdoors, but they lay eggs indoors near food sources for the larvae, often in closets, under furniture, along baseboards, and in vents.
Control centers on cleaning, protecting vulnerable items, and removing the larval food sources, since the damage is done by larvae hidden in quiet spots.

Look for small holes in wool or silk items, shed bristly larval skins, and small rounded beetles near windows. Damage in closets and under furniture is common.
They do not bite or spread disease, but the larvae damage fabrics and stored goods, and the bristly hairs can irritate some people.
Vacuum thoroughly, launder or dry-clean and seal natural fabrics, remove infested stored items, and treat harborage areas where larvae are found.
