What Are Indianmeal Moths?

The Indianmeal moth is the most common pantry moth, recognized by its small size and two-toned wings that are pale near the body and coppery toward the tips. The damage is done by the caterpillar-like larvae.

Larvae infest grains, cereal, flour, nuts, dried fruit, birdseed, and pet food, leaving behind silky webbing in the product. The fluttering adult moths near the ceiling or pantry are usually the first thing people notice.

How to Control Indianmeal Moths

Spraying does not solve a pantry moth problem; finding and removing every infested item does.

  • Inspect all dry goods, including unopened packages, for webbing and larvae.
  • Discard infested items in a sealed bag and outdoor trash.
  • Vacuum shelves, cracks, and corners where larvae crawl to pupate.
  • Store dry goods in sealed containers and use pheromone traps to monitor.

Treatments are selected and applied per their labels. Tell us about children, pets, edible gardens, beehives, and other sensitive areas before service, and follow all preparation and re-entry instructions. More on pet- and pollinator-conscious treatment →

Common Questions

Where do pantry moths come from?

Indianmeal moths usually arrive as eggs or larvae inside packaged dry goods, then spread to other items in the pantry as adults lay more eggs.

How do I get rid of Indianmeal moths?

Find and discard every infested item, vacuum and clean shelves and cracks, store dry goods in sealed containers, and use pheromone traps to monitor for stragglers.

Why do moths keep coming back?

Because an infested item, sometimes an unopened package, is still in the pantry. They will persist until every source is found and removed.
