What Are Crane Flies?
Crane flies are large, gangly, long-legged flies often mistaken for giant mosquitoes and nicknamed 'mosquito hawks' or 'mosquito eaters.' Both ideas are wrong: they do not bite people, and they do not eat mosquitoes.
The adults live only a short time and barely feed. They are drawn to lights and often turn up on porches and around doors, where they are clumsy but completely harmless.
Do Crane Flies Need Control?
Adult crane flies are a non-issue and need no treatment. The only situation worth noting is the larvae, called leatherjackets, which live in soil and in large numbers can occasionally damage turf.
- Adults are harmless and short-lived; no treatment is warranted.
- Reduce attractant lighting if they gather at doors.
- Healthy, well-managed turf tolerates normal larvae levels.
- Significant turf damage from leatherjackets is uncommon in most yards.
