What Are House Flies?

The common house fly is a gray fly with four dark stripes on its back. It breeds in decaying organic matter such as garbage, pet waste, compost, and spilled food, completing its life cycle in about a week in warm weather.

Because flies move between filth and food, they can carry bacteria on their bodies and contaminate surfaces and food they land on.

How to Control House Flies

Fly control is mostly about sanitation, removing breeding sites, and keeping flies out, since sprays alone do not address the source.

  • Keep trash sealed, take it out often, and clean up pet waste and spills.
  • Eliminate breeding sites like compost, garbage, and standing organic matter.
  • Use tight screens, door sweeps, and air curtains to keep flies out.
  • Use traps and targeted treatment for problem areas as a supplement.

Common Questions

Why do I suddenly have a lot of house flies?

A nearby breeding source such as garbage, pet waste, or decaying matter usually allows a quick population boom, since flies develop from egg to adult in about a week.

Are house flies a health risk?

They can carry bacteria between filth and food and contaminate surfaces, so reducing them is a sanitation issue as much as a nuisance one.

How do I get rid of house flies?

Remove breeding sources, tighten sanitation, seal screens and doors, and use traps or targeted treatment for hotspots. Source removal matters most.
