  • Active: Gather on homes in fall to overwinter
  • Defense: Release an odor when crushed
  • Concern: Nuisance clustering indoors and out

What Are Stink Bugs?

Stink bugs are shield-shaped insects, brown or green, named for the odor they release when crushed or disturbed. Outdoors they feed on plants, but the household problem is seasonal.

In fall they gather on warm, sunny exterior walls and work their way inside through gaps to overwinter, then reappear indoors on warm winter and spring days.

How to Control Stink Bugs

Because the issue is overwintering invaders, exclusion before fall is far more effective than dealing with them once inside, and crushing them only releases odor.

  • Seal gaps around windows, doors, vents, utility lines, and the foundation before fall.
  • Repair screens and add door sweeps and weatherstripping.
  • Vacuum (and empty) rather than crush bugs found indoors.
  • Treat the exterior perimeter ahead of fall clustering if needed.

Common Questions

Why are stink bugs on my house in the fall?

They are seeking warm places to overwinter and gather on sunny walls before slipping inside through gaps. Sealing entry points before fall is the best defense.

Should I crush stink bugs?

No. Crushing releases their odor and can attract more. Vacuum them up and empty the canister, or remove them by hand outdoors.

How do I keep stink bugs out?

Seal exterior gaps, repair screens, add door sweeps, and treat the perimeter before fall clustering begins.
