Stink bugs cluster on sunny walls in fall trying to get inside for winter. Learn why exclusion, not crushing, is the answer.
Reviewed and updated June 2026

Stink bugs are fall invaders that seek warm overwintering sites indoors. Sealing entry points before fall is the most effective control.
Stink bugs are shield-shaped insects, brown or green, named for the odor they release when crushed or disturbed. Outdoors they feed on plants, but the household problem is seasonal.
In fall they gather on warm, sunny exterior walls and work their way inside through gaps to overwinter, then reappear indoors on warm winter and spring days.
Because the issue is overwintering invaders, exclusion before fall is far more effective than dealing with them once inside, and crushing them only releases odor.

No. Crushing releases their odor and can attract more. Vacuum them up and empty the canister, or remove them by hand outdoors.
Seal exterior gaps, repair screens, add door sweeps, and treat the perimeter before fall clustering begins.
