West Nile Virus

West Nile virus is the leading mosquito-borne disease concern in the continental United States. It circulates mainly between birds and mosquitoes. Most infected people do not feel sick, but a small proportion develop serious neurologic illness.

EEE, Chikungunya, Zika, and Malaria

Eastern equine encephalitis is rare but can be severe. Chikungunya commonly causes fever and joint pain. Zika is especially important during pregnancy because infection can harm a developing fetus. Malaria is caused by parasites transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes and is most often diagnosed in U.S. travelers.

Disease patterns change. For current local activity, consult county or state public-health reporting rather than relying on old case counts.

When to Seek Medical Care

Contact a healthcare professional if you develop fever or other concerning symptoms after mosquito exposure, especially after recent travel. Seek urgent care for severe headache, confusion, weakness, seizures, difficulty breathing, or other serious symptoms.

  • Tell the clinician where and when you traveled.
  • Mention known mosquito exposure and symptom timing.
  • Do not use an online article to diagnose an illness.

Reduce Your Risk

Use an EPA-registered repellent as directed, wear protective clothing when practical, keep screens in good repair, and remove standing water weekly. Professional mosquito control can reduce activity around a property but cannot eliminate disease risk.

Quick Tip

Track the time and place where bites occur. Daytime activity, nighttime activity, and sudden post-rain outbreaks often point to different mosquito groups and different solutions.

Common Questions

Which mosquito-borne disease is most relevant in North Texas?

West Nile virus is an important recurring local concern. Current activity varies, so check local public-health updates during mosquito season.

Can one mosquito transmit every disease?

No. Different mosquito groups transmit different pathogens, and a mosquito must be infected before it can transmit one.

Does mosquito control guarantee disease prevention?

No. It can reduce mosquito activity, but personal protection and public-health guidance remain essential.
