Quick Facts
- Human lice: Treated with medical/pharmacy products, not sprays
- Spread: Human lice spread by close personal contact
- Bird/rodent lice: Associated with nests on or in structures
- Concern: Identify which type before acting
Human Lice Are a Medical Matter
Head and body lice that affect people are not a household pest-control problem and are not treated with yard or home insecticide sprays. They spread through close personal contact and shared items, not from the yard.
If you are dealing with human lice, the right resources are your doctor, pharmacist, or school guidance, using products and combing methods labeled for people. Home insecticides are neither appropriate nor effective for this.
Bird and Rodent Lice Are Different
Pest control can help with a related situation: lice and mites associated with bird or rodent nests on a structure. When a nest is active or abandoned, these parasites can move into living spaces seeking a host.
- Locate and safely remove bird or rodent nests on or in the structure.
- Seal the entry points and roosting spots that allowed nesting.
- Clean and treat the affected area as appropriate.
- This is separate from human lice, which require medical, not structural, treatment.
