Most likely clover mites, which wander in from lawns and shrubs in spring. They are harmless but a nuisance; avoid crushing them as they can leave a stain.
Nest-associated bird or rodent mites can seek a human host after their nest is removed or abandoned. Finding and removing the source nest is the key step.
Seal entry points, keep a plant-free border near the foundation for clover mites, and remove any bird or rodent nests that could harbor biting mites.
