Quick Facts

  • What: Tiny arachnids, several kinds
  • Common: Clover mites; bird and rodent nest mites
  • Sign: Tiny moving specks on sills or walls
  • Concern: Nuisance; some bite when a host is gone

What Are Nuisance Mites?

Several different tiny mites show up around homes, and the right response depends on which one you have. The two most common are clover mites and nest-associated mites.

  • Clover mites are tiny reddish specks that wander in from lawns and shrubs, especially in spring, and are harmless.
  • Bird and rodent mites can enter living spaces after a nest of birds or rodents is removed or abandoned and the mites seek a new host.

How to Control Mites

Clover mites need exclusion and a plant-free border, while nest mites require removing the source nest. Identifying the type guides the fix.

  • For clover mites, seal gaps and keep a vegetation-free strip near the foundation.
  • For nest mites, locate and remove the bird or rodent nest and seal entry.
  • Vacuum visible mites and wipe down affected sills and surfaces.
  • Treat entry points and harborage zones based on the mite involved.
